Your own rate, worked out

One month of takings, split into the prices inside it. Nothing leaves your browser.

Card acceptance · UK · caps checked 16 Sep 2026
The short answer

Your effective card fee rate is one division

Add every card charge on last month’s statement, including terminal rental, any minimum monthly charge and PCI fees, then divide by that month’s card turnover. The calculator below does the same sum, but splits it first: the interchange that is capped by law, the part that is not, scheme fees, your provider’s markup and the fixed charges.

The calculator

One month, taken apart

Interchange, capped share£0.00
Interchange, uncapped share£0.00
Scheme and processing£0.00
Acquirer markup£0.00
Fixed charges£0.00
Total cost of accepting cards£0.00
Effective rate on turnover0%

The capped lines use the statutory caps of 0.2% and 0.3%, which apply when merchant, acquirer and issuer are all in the UK. Commercial and cross-border cards sit outside those caps, so that line takes the rate from your statement rather than inventing one. Defaults are placeholders, not a benchmark.

Do not know your scheme fee or markup separately? That is a blended contract, and the markup note is about exactly that.

How to read the result

Three things the numbers tell you

  1. If fixed charges are a large share of the total, your problem is the contract, not the rate. Check the terminal rental and the minimum charge first.
  2. If the uncapped interchange line is large, your card mix is the story: business and foreign cards cost more, and that is not something a provider can negotiate away.
  3. The markup line is the only one a better quote can move. Compare quotes on it alone.

Run it for a busy month and a quiet one. A minimum monthly charge only shows itself in the quiet month.

Questions we get

Four questions about the calculator

How do I calculate my card processing fees?
Add every card charge for the month, including terminal rental and any minimum charge, and divide by the month’s card turnover. The result is your effective rate.
Why does the calculator ask for my card mix?
Because only UK consumer debit and credit are capped, at 0.2% and 0.3%. Business and foreign cards are priced differently, so the mix changes the result.
Is anything I type sent anywhere?
No. The arithmetic runs in your browser and nothing is stored or sent.
Where do I find the scheme fee and markup?
On an IC++ statement they are separate lines. On blended pricing ask your provider for an IC++ breakdown of one month.
